HIV/AIDS EPIDEMIC AMONG AFRICAN AMERICAN

According to the Center of Disease Control

In 2005, there were 18,510 new HIV/AIDS diagnosed in the United States (33 states that have documnted programs).

HIV infection is the leading cause of death for African American women aged 25-34.  Women account for more than 1/4 of all new HIV/AIDS diagnoses.  78% of these new infections are from heterosexual contact, followed by injection drug use.

What can we do as Nurses?

Make sure African Americans are getting tested, treated, and know that prevention services are availabe in the community.

Specifically, with a class of AIDS drugs called protease inhibitors that were released on the market in 1996. As a result, deaths from the disease dropped immediately by 40 percent.

Stroke is a type of cardiovascular disease, that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or burst. That part of the brain cannot get the blood or oxygen it needs, so it starts to die. The effects of stroke can be devastating. Brain cells damaged by a stroke cannot function, and the part of the body they control will no longer work.
Stroke is one of the leading causes of severe long term disability. Paralysis on one side of the body, speech impairment, and memory loss are some of the long term effect.
If the symptoms of a stroke last for more thana few minutes, dial 911,  or get to the Emergency Room as soon as possible.
